Web 2.0

April 6, 2012

The discussion of Web 2.0 as it has been mentioned in this course and has been mentioned in other courses I have taken, has led me to recognize the importance of Web 2.0 tools/applications, etc.  For me particularly, the interest stems from being an educator and recognizing that to engage students who are better-versed in Web 2.0 technology than I am, prompts a desire to learn how to engage students, how to become further educated in Web 2.0 technology, and to learn the advantages of using Web 2.0 technology.  Many of these articles argue that Web 2.0 technology is changing the face of education – how students learn, how teachers teach, and how information is being provided.  What I have taken away from looking at these articles is that there is a power tied to Web 2.0 technology and that it is important to know how to harness that power and use it to everyone’s benefit.

In addition to 240, I am taking 281: Transformative Learning and Technology Literacies with Michael Stephens. We have been exploring Blowers’ 23 Things,, as well as reading Will Richardson’s Personal Learning Networks. Both advocate even the simplest exposure to the myriad Web 2.0 tools because these tools are greatly influencing and changing how we learn and how we interact with each other. It is pretty powerful when you begin to think about how much time we use computers and the Internet. I find this infinitely interesting! Thank you for sharing!

I also find it amazing how much young people know about technology. I often wonder how much my kids will know about computers when they are my age. Web 2.0 adds a completely new facet to education, it will be interesting to see the effects in the future.

I just did an informational interview at a county law library. When I asked the director what her dream is, she said it was to make the public aware of the all the resources the library can provide. I then asked if the library used any social media to get that message out, and the response was no. Learning the tools of Web 2.0 will no doubt help any library student find a job -Phil.
