Educational uses of Digital Story Telling

I found an article on the educational uses of digital story telling. The article starts by defining digital stories, and then lists “The Seven Elements of Digital Story telling”, and then lists three types of digital stories, personal narratives, historical documentaries, and stories designed to inform or instruct.

The article goes on to explain how teachers can use digital stories as instructional tools, and what learning outcomes and skills can be taught. The article describes problems students can have, and other considerations instructors must be aware of.

The article ends with describing research efforts into the use of digital story telling for learning. The article has a list of references.

Before coming to the MLIS program, I was in a Master’s program called Instructional Technology. We learned to make videos that would help people learn. I think creating videos is a good idea, but there is a learning curve involved and steps must be taken to get the most out of creating videos. We took an entire quarter (10 weeks) just to create 2 videos, one 2 minutes and the other 4 minutes. It was not easy. There is a lot of trial and error, but I think DS is a good thing to teach and to learn.
