Library Web Design

April 5, 2012

Hi everyone,

I selected an article that discusses designing library websites, a topic specific to this class and the subject of my final project.  The article discusses factors that individuals who design library websites encounter, especially in academic libraries.  The author identifies several factors that affect the design, development and usage of library websites.  The article provides sound reasoning and statistics to back-up its hypothesis.  I also found the article interesting because it also discussed topics we covered earlier in the semester, like usability and accessibility issues.  The link to the article is listed below, just click and read.

Great resource. I am always suggesting improvements for my library’s website (for example we have all databases listed under the generic menu item “e-resources” which makes me want to fall asleep and I know it makes the patrons look the other way). Good luck on your project.

What I found interesting is on page 100 regarding institution support of web designers. “Lack of supervisor support inhibits website usability.” I’ve seen this all too often in various fields and it really can hurt an organization in the long run. Both support and knowledge are invaluable to promoting an org’s values and mission. It is amazing that simple design factors, as we have read for this class as well, can make or break an org. Food for thought, especially as we move closer to our final projects! Thank you for sharing!
