Final Project Idea: Melvil Dewey

March 9, 2012

I always have a hard time coming up with ideas for project topics, so this is one I am not yet fully committed to.  This semester I am enrolled in LIBR 248, Beginning Cataloging and Classification.  We just finished up a few grueling weeks on the Dewey Decimal System, which got me thinking a little bit about the life of Melvil Dewey.

Dewey pursued many endeavors in his lifetime.  Besides creating one of the most frustrating (but efficient) cataloging systems in the world, he also pushed for adoption of the metric system in the United States and for a complete reform of English spelling.  Certain aspects of his life are intriguing, as he seemed to have a tendency for stirring controversy (he had a great deal of enemies and was fired from his position as New York state librarian).  In addition, his other contributions to library science cannot be underestimated.

I believe my site will be geared toward a general audience with at least an eighth-grade education.  Some may want to research Dewey for a school project or others may just be curious about him.

A pathfinder to resources for researchers into the life and work of Dewey is a good project, just try to focus the audience: primary school, middle school, HS or collegiate?
