Final project topic proposal: using the library to trace ancestry

March 7, 2012

If this topic is approved, I would like to create a website showing how a patron can conduct genealogical research by using their local library, visiting a library in another area specializing in genealogy, using databases online, and outlining some of the most helpful print materials. This site would cover the basic steps for a beginner to start their own family tree or study the lineage of another person. It would also provide some helpful hints about navigating databases and what resources to look for to find different types of information. The site would also outline some of the best libraries in the United States to conduct this type of research. If the patron is interested in traveling to another library, the site would provide a detailed list of libraries that are especially attractive to genealogists because of extensive specialized collections that include original documents, newspapers, and maps.
