Myles Final Project Idea

October 4, 2011

Since my expertise is in collection development I thought I would tailor my project to CD specifically media (Cds/DVDs etc).  This could include weeding, purchasing (specific vendors).  Philosophy of what is bought etc.  If there is something specific that you would like to know let me know and I can incorporate it.

Yes, this seems like an interesting topic. Does the library provide what’s rare and hard to get (and deemed culturally important) or what’s popular (and likely forgotten in a few years)? How should they handle the delicate nature of DVDs and CDs? They always come back beat to heck and can’t be circulated as long as books. And they can’t be repaired like books. What about music in electronic format compared to audiobooks? Also, have libraries ever been threatened by legal action for people putting CDs on their computers like people who have servers that others could potentially download from?

Great simple proposal that fits in with a core competency and will make an excellent evidence example. Justine’s comments are also an interesting insight that can be addressed. At one of my former libraries the librarian went by the “100 best movies list” and started buying.
