The Semantic Web

October 8, 2010

I intend to do my final project on the Semantic Web, which is the brain-child of Tim Berners-Lee at the W3C. Basically it is a proposed set of procedures and technologies for adding metadata to elements of information on the Web in order to make the Web more interpretable by computers.  I wrote a term paper on the subject last spring, and have a bunch of materials and links that I think would provide enough content.  Here is the abstract from my paper to provide a little more information:

This paper analyzes the knowledge representation system which underlies a series of standards designed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to enable the creation and encoding of machine-readable metadata for data on the Web. The W3C believes these standards will allow the creation of a “Semantic Web” or “Web of Data” which will radically increase the capabilities of autonomous information agents to access, organize, and use data, allowing for more accurate searching, integrating heterogeneous databases, and data utilization. The Semantic Web relies on a highly flexible graph model of expressions, capable of representing datasets from relational databases, and simpler hierarchical formats, in Resource Description Format based ontologies. Though the amount of RDF based data on the Web continues to increase, the ultimate viability of this system of knowledge representation, and the applications which depend upon it, remains to be seen.

I’m really enjoying this class, and I have been very impressed by the sites that all of you have put together. It is unfortunate that I haven’t been able to attend the Tuesday lectures (darn children with their transportation demands!), but the recordings are invaluable. I look forward to watching our sites continue to develop, even though it makes me realize that a talent for graphic design is not a gift I possess.

It sounds like you will have more than enough material. The image on you homepage is kinda spooky. What kind of mischief was that girl up to?
