10 Usability Nightmares

April 9, 2010

I read the article “10 Usability Nightmares” from Smashing Magazine, an ezine for web designers and developers. Earlier in the semester, we read selections from Krug’s Don’t Make Me Think. This article is similar, but rather than telling you what to do, it highlights what not to do. While most points were obvious, one argument I found particularly interesting was against the use of drop-down menus. The author, Vitaly Friedman, observes that while they help web developers save vertical space on pages, these menus are a nightmare when users are forced to focus the mouse precisely in order to select a link.
