Creating Clean URLs

April 7, 2010

I recently read in an interesting bit in the book Build Your Own Database Driven Website Using PHP & MYSQL by Kevin Yank. The author suggests that you should not advertise or flaunt your scripting language by showing file extensions (makes it easier for the bad guys to mess with your work). To conceal your file extensions simply make a new directory (folder) and rename your file to index.php. For example if you had a file called today.php, you could create a new folder named “today”, change your today.php file to index.php, place the index.php file in the “today” folder and you have a url like (www)yourdomain.com/today. Thinking along these lines I found an article that gives 3 convincing reasons to use clean urls. http://www.centernetworks.com/top-3-reasons-to-use-clean-urls

As a newbie, this is something I hadn’t thought of but it’s something we already did with our homepage. Thanks for this link- it showed me that beautifying our urls isn’t just for looks.
