Jeanette’s idea

October 6, 2009

I don’t work at a library, and not many of my papers lend themselves to a website, except one. For my collections management class, I wrote a paper called “Selling Books Online: Finding New Homes for Unwanted Books.” It’s about selling deaccessioned or donated library books online as a creative way for libraries to raise funds (and also getting rid of weeded items!). I could make a website that describes some examples, has a pathfinder of websites for selling books, as well as general advice for selling used books online.  I look forward to hearing some feedback on this idea, because I’m having trouble thinking of anything else. Thanks in advance!

I don’t think that’s a bad idea at all. My brother used to work in a used book store and they used Amazon as a storefront for certain texts, but the idea may not even occur to some libraries and some may not have time to do the research themselves. And even librarians who have sold books online may not know of the resources you do.

    Hi Jeanette,

I think that sounds like a great idea. The library I used to work had a huge book sale once a year, and they made a ton of money from it. Being able to sell books year-round online seems like a great idea to bring in some extra revenue. And being able to centrally access the resources and instructions for selling those books would make that even easier. I’ll be interested to see what you come up with.

Is there a book heaven? 🙂 I think this is a great idea in terms of weeding. There are so many books that can be recycled one way or the other and providing resources for ways that libraries can weed and still raise funds is a win win.

    Hi Jeanette,

I really like your topic. Here’s a link to the nonprofit advocacy organization that was formed to support my county library –

    http://www.friends-library.org/

They do used book sales like you mentioned in your post. So maybe it will generate some ideas for you.

    Jeanette,

Good idea. As one of the commenters noted, Friends Groups are a big part of used book selling to raise funds for public libraries. Helping them connect to other groups and broadening their potential market would be great. Think of the eBay and Amazon used book sellers.

    Consider this approved.
