Miranda’s Final Project proposal

October 3, 2009

Hi, Everyone:

I am thinking of creating a website for the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) that specifically benefit the senior citizens of City of Los Angeles.  This website will be based on exactly the materials I presented/discussed in my paper for the LIBR 275 that I took over the summer.  The paper is about creating a library kiosk for city’s senior citizens (Caucasians, Hispanics, and Asians) population.  The information I included in the paper are  links to government websites and non-profit organizations (for help on  health, financial, taxes issues), volunteer opportunities.  I might need to add other materials such as latest local, national news, and library news page.  Also a page on suggested list of books to read….

What other pages do you suggest?  Hope to get your responses.

It sounds like you already have plenty of ideas for great pages. One other thought, do you have any info for those who do not read English very well or at all? I don’t know if translation of your pages is possible (could be a difficult undertaking) but maybe consider using simple English and links/info for translation services either online or locally…

Hi, Miranda. Thank you so much for your great suggestions for my final project. I really appreciate your advice. Jen is right! It seems like you have a lot of wonderful ideas for your final project already.

Since you already have great ideas regarding contents, I have a couple of suggestions regarding the design of your website. I think it is important to consider the computer skill as well as physical limitation of target users, especially when your target user is senior. Features you may want to consider is to have a option of text size (small, large, extra large), a option to “hear” the website, and large icons and buttons for easier access.

As for the content, I think a list of free (or small cost) activities for seniors would be helpful too.

    Good luck on your project!

Hi Miranda. You have a great idea in mind for your final project! Very interesting and useful for a growing segment of L.A.’s population. I agree with all the points that Jen and Mayumi have brought up. In addition, as part of non-profit organizations or news resources that you identify on your website for senior citizens, you might want to include information on elder abuse and schemes (related to medical care, retirement, and other finance-related issues) about which elderly should be informed for their safety and security. Also, you might want to provide information on public transportation in L.A. since many senior citizens might not drive and might want to know how to get around the city, if they can manage to walk short distances.

    Hi Miranda,

Love your idea. The only suggestions I could think of (you already have so many great ideas):

Be careful not to make your page(s) too busy.

maybe add a senior events calendar or link to senior center events page?

Good luck, I hope I get to see it.
