Mayumi’s project idea

October 2, 2009

I’m thinking to do my final project with a pathfinder I made for another SLIS course last semester. The pathfinder is for runaway/thrown-away youth. My only concern is that the paper is only 12 pages so I am not sure it is enough to meet the requirement for the final project.

I am open for your ideas and suggestions! Thank you.

    Hi Mayumi:

Are you thinking about creating a website on how runaway/thrown-away youths can make the best out of their local library’s resources? Or how your local library can be of great source and assistance for runaway/thrown-away youths to get back on their feet?

If so, then maybe you should consider your site to have a page with resources where runaway youths can find free medical assistance (hospital, clinics), free housing, free food, etc. There could also be a page dedicate to learning and education such as how the library has free classes to help them learn new skills (computer, knitting, reading, etc) or how they can applied for financial aid to attend adult/career education evening schools. This page can also have self-test materials or test-aid materials (such as books to read/check out) or/and web links to those evening schools for more information. Or another page jobs listing, and help/tips on resume, cover letter, interviews. A page where these teens can share their stories (forums/blogs) and a chance to help one another (giving advices, encouragements, etc). And possibly a page with current news especially post anything relating to runaway/thrown-away situations where they would hopefully learn from it and not have it repeated to them and also post some successful stories of how runaway/thrown-away teens got their life back. There could also be a page with stuff to help inspire them (poems, music, books, stories, people, cartoons, places, etc). Overall, the website is loaded with resources and information, but at the same time, also point out there are lots of other stuff that can be found in the actual library like free forms, publications, career books, etc.

I am not sure what you already covered in your 12 pages of paper. Hopefully you will find some/few of my suggestions above useful. I just thought I put myself in the shoes of the runaway/thrown-away youth, and ask myself what I would have needed that the library can help or can sorta help.

I think you need to shift toward a library topic, which yours is not (as currently stated). No hurries; perhaps you might study some of the proposals from peers?

Thank you for your comment, Derek.
I was thinking to pretend that the pathfinder is a part of a library website…

do you think it would work?? or I still need to change the topic.
